What is Counselling

Counselling provides you, as client, with a safe environment within which to discuss your thoughts, feelings and emotions with the aim of gaining insight and understanding to any problems that you may be experiencing with the ultimate objective of overcoming them. It falls under the umbrella of talking therapies and is strictly bound by confidentiality.

Clients choose to come to counselling for many different reasons. Counselling can help with a number of specific difficulties, such as:

  • Abuse
  • Addictions
  • Anxiety
  • Bereavement
  • Depression
  • Eating disorders
  • Low confidence/ low self esteem
  • Panic attacks
  • Phobias
  • Relational problems
  • Sexual difficulties
  • Stress
  • Trauma
  • Work related issues
My role, as counsellor, is to aid this journey by empathically listening and encouraging an exploration of your internal world. This is done non-judgementally and with a belief that you, the client, knows best. I do not have the answers to your difficulties but I will walk alongside you and help you to process the insights that you gain. In turn, this will enable you to make choices and live a happier and more authentic life.

Counselling can either be open ended on a long term basis, or take the form of short term “solution focussed” work.  Clients may choose counselling because they recognise that value can be gained by discussing and exploring their inner thoughts with an independent person, something that may not always be possible by talking to a close friend or family member.

About Me

I am a BACP accredited counsellor with over 10 years of clinical experience. I initially trained as an integrative counsellor, learning about the main models of counselling and psychotherapy and integrated them into the way I work today.  I continue with my career and professional development, I am particularly interested in attachment based therapy and prior to my counselling training I worked with children both in school and home settings.

I have worked in the NHS, in an organisation supporting women affected by domestic violence, in a bereavement centre as well as my private practice.

I am able to work on a long term basis, allowing the therapy to continue weekly or fortnightly for an open ended period of time; or  a short term basis, where we collectively agree the length of therapy at the beginning of our work.

I regularly receive clinical supervision  which ensures that I continue to work safely and ethically in accordance with BACP’s Ethical Framework.

Counselling sessions are charged at £65 per session. I do operate a sliding scale for students and I am happy to discuss this with you on initial contact or during our initial session. Once we have entered into a counselling contract, all sessions need to be paid for unless previously agreed. I will endeavour to give at least 4 weeks notice of any holidays I take. If you do need to cancel a session I require a minimum of 48 hours notice and will try to accommodate with an alternative time, where possible. The full cost of the session is payable if less than 48 hours notice is given.

If you decide that you would like to talk me about the possibility of counselling please drop me a line or give me a call, and I would be happy to answer any questions you might have.
